Ever since he was young, Dr. Teddy Willsey had always been interested in bodybuilding and science. This interest led him to the University of Pittsburgh’s Exercise Science program, and later to the Old Dominion University, where he completed his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. In 2016, Teddy pushed his passions further and founded Healthy Baller Therapy, where he is also the Director of Sports Medicine. In addition to clinical work, Teddy is a writer who consults, teaches, and speaks worldwide. Teddy joins me today to share his journey in physical therapy and strength & conditioning and discuss bridging the gap between rehab and performance. He reveals a key area where physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches can improve, and explains why there should be more emphasis on sports-specific rehab. He also illustrates how he qualitatively and quantitatively measures for risk injury and return to play and defines the meaning of the internal feedback mechanism. Bridging the gap between strength & conditioning and physical therapy means understanding we need to help people get to their true athletic form. – Dr. Teddy Willsey This week on the Physical Preparation Podcast: * Teddy’s background, journey into the world of physical preparation, and starting a physical therapy practice in a strength & conditioning gym * How Teddy’s experience in strength & conditioning and personal training helped him in physical therapy school * How to get better results for athletes by bridging the gap between rehab and strength & conditioning * Areas of improvement for physical therapists in sports and why Teddy thinks there should be more emphasis on residency * Improving communication processes between physical therapists and strength & conditioning coaches * The quantitative metrics Teddy use to assess risk injury and play readiness * Return to Sports Index and why qualitative measures are essential in assessing risk injury and return to play * The definition of an internal feedback mechanism * How much imperfection is acceptable in movement and how much pain is permissible to work with during the rehabilitation process Related Content: * Physical Preparation with Buddy Morris Connect with Dr. Teddy Willsey: * Strength Coach Therapy * Teddy Willsey on Twitter * Teddy Willsey on Instagram Stop the Frustration!
